Piccolo Mondo At The Michelangelo – Executive Chef Andrew Atkinson
Born on 11 August 1970 in Cardiff, Wales, and now a full-blooded South African citizen, Andrew Atkinson is the executive chef of the kitchens of the Michelangelo Hotel and its Piccolo Mondo restaurant in the heart of Sandton.
Over his career Andrew has performed many roles outside of the kitchen, including a number of television programmes and shows. Notable achievements include a role as one of the chefs on the South African version of Ready Steady Cook, 32 cooking programmes for the 2012 FIFA World Cup, a judge for the launch of Chopped SA on the Food Network Channel, as well as most recently a judge on MasterChef SA.
Over and above this, he has been in various radio interviews as well as done numerous voice overs for commercials. Having competed and judged all over the globe, Andrew was a member of, and captained the South African National Culinary Team. He has also been a Director of Competitions for South African Chefs’ Association (SACA) and is an accredited World Academy of Chefs Societies (WACS) judge.
Some of his notable in-kitchen experiences include entertaining the taste buds of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles, former US President Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Sting, Whitney Houston and various other VIP’s and dignitaries, as well as a stint cooking in his own kitchen with UB40.
Prior to joining Legacy and the Michelangelo, Andrew ran his own business that catered for a number of large-scale events including: the SA Presidential Inauguration, the Evelyn Mandela Funeral, and Adelaide Tambo Funeral for 17 500 people, as well as various sporting events including the A1 Grand Prix for three years, and various international and local rugby and cricket matches, as well as a number of corporate companies.
Initially trained through the ranks of the Southern Sun Group, Andrew moved to the Indaba Hotel as chef de partie. He held the role of sous chef of the Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga in Durban where he was later promoted to executive sous chef. Shortly after he returned to Johannesburg and joined the Carlton Hotel as senior sous chef of the Three Ships Fine Dining Restaurant. He then helped open the Sandton Hilton Hotel as senior sous chef in charge of banqueting and the main kitchen.
He also assisted in opening the first local Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Pretoria, as executive sous chef and later it’s executive chef. Andrew then took on the role of executive chef of the Westcliff hotel in Johannesburg and later opened his own catering and production business which he sold to rekindle his passion, catering for the palates of guests in five-star hotels, and joined the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton as its executive chef.
No stranger to success, Andrew has represented SA and won various medals at local and international competitions, including but not limited to: the African Cup Culinaire in Zimbabwe, Culinary Olympics in Berlin, ScotHot International Culinaire in Scotland and International Salmon Grand Prix in Ireland. He has also performed a number of South African food promotions such as the SA food festival at the Hotel Berlina in Berlin, the SA food festival at the Mainz Hilton in Germany, and the SA food festival at the Rio Sheraton in Brazil for the Cape to Rio yacht race.
